Sophomore defender Olivia MBala scored her first career goal in Thursday's regular-season finale

Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will be the No. 8 seed for next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships after falling 2-1 to FIU in the regular-season finale on Thursday at the FAU Soccer Stadium. The game was played under inclement weather from Hurricane Sandy.

Trailing 2-0, FAU tried to mount a rally as sophomore defender Olivia Mbala's scored her first career goal with six minutes remaining in the match.

FIU's Chelsea Leiva scored a goal in each half to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage. Her first goal came 17 minutes into the match on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box following a pass by Kim Lopez. Leiva added a goal midway through the second half. FAU senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes made five saves in net. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch played the second half for the Owls. Both goalkeepers played in their final home match.

MBala paced the offensive effort with the goal. Freshmen Dani Dangremond, Tessa Maffett and Taylor Sorrels also recorded one shot.

FAU finishes the regular season with a 5-12 mark and 3-7 record in conference play. The team's opponent in the conference tournament is still to be determined. Postseason action begins on Wednesday, October 31 at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL.
