Denton, TX - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 match to Sun Belt Conference-leading University of North Texas on Friday. The Mean Green broke a 1-1 draw with a goal with 12 minutes remaining.
The Owls fall to 3-9 on the season and 1-4 in SBC action. FAU returns to the pitch on Friday, October 12, at 7 p.m. when it hosts the University of Louisiana-Monroe at the FAU Soccer Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. North Texas remains perfect in league play at 5-0 and improves to 10-3-1 overall.
Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie tied the match with her eighth goal of the season in the 74th minute. Four of her eight goals have come in conference action. The goal was set up by freshman forward Natalia Hernandez’s assist.
The host scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute on Karla Pineda’s fifth goal of the season. North Texas’ Leah Cox gave the Mean Green a 1-0 advantage off a header in the fifth minute.
FAU senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes made eight saves in goal, giving her 316 career saves. The Clermont, Fla. native is six saves shy of breaking Molly Keating’s (2000-03) school record of 321 saves.
Emslie paced the offensive attack with all three of her shots being on goal. Junior forward Brittney Nash, a Texas native, also tallied three shots. Having one shot each were junior midfielder Ellie Smith and freshman forward Taylor Sorrels, also a Texas native.
