Buies Creek, NC. - A goal by freshman Julie Ferguson in the 88th minute of play propelled Florida Atlantic over Campbell University 1-0 Thursday night. The win was the first conference win of the season for the Lady Owls.
With a minute and a half remaining, junior Rhonda Jones served a free kick from midfield into the box where she caught Ferguson in mid-stride from a run down the sideline. From eight yards out Ferguson headed the ball past Camel keeper Erin Switalski for her first goal of the season and first game-winner of her college career.
Behind the Lady Owl defense of Krista Fine, Danielle Castro, Tamea Wimmer and Lisa Rife, Campbell was kept at bay for most of the first half and was all but shut down in the second as the defense allowed only three shots on goal. FAU (4-3) out shot Campbell (2-5-1) 18-12 for the match and had a 15-4 advantage in corner kicks.
FAU keeper Molly Keating saved six shots for her second shutout of the season and 15th of her career. Jones now has two points in her last two games after not having a point in the first five games. With her game-winning assist in the waning moments of the game, she moved passed current Lady Owl Jessica Kmiotek for seventh place on the all-time points list with 26 for her career.
FAU redeems itself against the Fighting Camels as the women's team lost last year by the score of 1-0. Coach Brian Dooley now has a 3-1 record all-time versus Campbell.
Florida Atlantic plays its next game Saturday, September 28th in Atlanta, Ga., against conference foe Georgia State University. The Lady Owls return to action at home Friday, October 4th against another conference rival, Belmont.
