Coral Gables, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team could not hold onto its first lead of the season in a 2-1 loss to undefeated North Dakota State University on Friday night in the first game of the Hurricane Cup at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Owls, 0-5, wraps up action in the tournament on Sunday, September 12 with a match against West Virginia University, starting at 11:30 a.m. North Dakota State improved to 3-0-2 on the season.
NDSU’s Holly Christian broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 68th minute to give the Bison the deciding tally. The scoring play came on a header following a corner kick by teammate Abbey Stratton.
After battling to a scoreless draw in the opening half, FAU took the lead four minutes into the second half after a Bison foul. Junior defender Gabriela DeVries took the free kick from the right side and found freshman forward Jesse Shugg slashing toward the NDSU goal. Shugg finished the play on a header that found its way into the net from inside the left goalpost – the first of the career collegiate goal for the Burlington, Ontario native.
North Dakota State struck right back in the 53rd minute to tie the match. Morgan DeMike would find the back of the FAU net on a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box after receiving a pass from teammate Candice D’Arcangeli.
The Owls controlled possession for most of the match, outshooting the Bison by a 12-9 margin and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks overall. Shugg paced the offensive attack with seven shots, including four on goal. The team also received positive contributions from redshirt senior defender Sonia Richards and freshman defender Allyson Buerosse with one shot each. FAU’s best scoring chance in the opening half came in the 39th minute as freshman forward Marisa Russo missed on a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. In the second half Shugg broke free for a one-on-one opportunity but her left foot shot sailed high of the crossbar.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Lantes recorded two saves in net.
