Women's Soccer Falls to UCF 2-0

Sept. 8, 2002

Final Stats

The Florida Atlantic women's soccer team was beaten by conference foe UCF Sunday afternoon 2-0. The game was a back and forth battle in the first half as emotions were running high but the Golden Knights scored two goals in the second half to deflate FAU's game. The Lady Owls had numerous scoring chances but were unable to put the ball into the back of the net. This was the second time FAU has lost to UCF in the final half as the Lady Owls lost to the Knights in the championship game of the Atlantic Sun Tournament last year. FAU's record now falls to 1-2-0 while UCF remains undefeated at 4-0-0.

FAU's defense led by Janine Aylward, Tammea Wimmer and Krista Fine were able to shut down UCF's top scorer Jennifer Montgomery and the rest of the Knights attackers the entire first half. But a couple of breakdowns allowed UCF the chance to put the ball on net as the Golden Knights out shot FAU in the match 11-5. The first goal, scored by Patty McDowell was set up by a long cross that went past the back post. The ball was picked up by Becca Eshelman and sent into the box where she found McDowell set up. McDowell shot the ball with her left foot past an outstretched Molly Keating for the goal.

FAU's attack seemed strong in the beginning as Julie Ferguson and the midfield were setting up Brandi Herrmann and Kari Kaiser at the forward positions. But bad touches plagued the Lady Owls in the second half and allowed UCF to escape the pressure. Trina Maso de Moya hit a long through ball to set up Danielle DiLeo but keeper Jessica Kuhlman made a diving save to thwart FAU. Minutes later Danielle Castro sent a long ball into midfielder Rhonda Jones but again the ball proved to be just long as it rolled into Kuhlman's hands once again. The win was Kuhlman's fourth in a row and her fourth shutout of the season.

Florida Atlantic plays it's next game Wednesday, September 11 versus FIU in Miami, FL at 5:30 pm.
