COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- For the first time since 2003, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team is 3-0 after a 2-0 shutout of Sam Houston State on Friday.
Junior goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater recorded her tenth career shutout to move into a tie for fourth all-time at FAU.
Drinkwater made eight saves as both teams took six shots in each half.
The Owls broke the stalemate in the 54th minute as newcomer Geovana Alves scored her team-high third goal of the season to put FAU on top. Freshman Mimi Godoy fed the ball to Alves, who took the goalkeeper one-on-one and fired the shot to the upper right corner from 15 yards out.
After a fantastic save by Drinkwater to keep the advantage, freshman Mary Hasler sent a free kick just inside the far post to seal the contest at 2-0.
The Owls face No. 4 Texas A&M Sunday at 7 p.m. The game will be carried live on the SEC Network. FAU hosts Miami in its home opener Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
