Women's Soccer Takes Second Straight, Defeating EMU 3-0
Aug. 25, 2017

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - For the second straight match, the offense of the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team put three in the back of the net, and the defense bent, but didn't break in turning away Eastern Michigan in the FAU Adidas Owl Classic, 3-0.

Turning Point:

After a quiet more than half of the opening period, the Owls (2-1) put two goals in in a span of five minutes. Ebba Blomqvist had a penalty kick turned away, but she followed the rebound and drilled in her second goal of the year in the 26th minute, and 4:41 later, the lead was doubled. Miracle Porter found Pernille Velta, who one-touched it ahead to a streaking Sammy Vitols, who deposited it in for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead.

The Finish:

The Owls did make good on a PK in the second half, when in the 49th minute, Miracle Porter notched the first goal of her FAU career as well. FAU survived the Eagles' onslaught for the last 31 minutes, which included eight shots and four of the five saves Jennifer Ocampo turned in on the night.

            Notables:

  • Ocampo garnered the shutout, nearly a year to the day of the first of her career (Aug 26, 2016)
  • Porter led the Owls with three shots, all on goal, and Blomqvist and Asta Arnadottir each had two
  • Blomqvist and Madison Caldwell both played all 90 minutes on the defensive backline
  • 20 Owls saw action on Friday night, with 13 playing 40 or more minutes

Quotable:

"It was a picturesque night and we had great fan support," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "The score is not indicative of how the game played out. Eastern Michigan is very good, very talented up front. They created a lot of great chances in the second half. (We were) probably fortunate to have the lead because a goal either way for them would have definitely changed the flow of the game. But we managed to keep the shutout, Jenny (Ocampo) played really well in goal, we bent but didn't break at times, and I thought we created some good clear-cut chances."

What's Next:

The FAU Adidas Owl Classic wraps up on Sunday, with EMU and Florida Gulf Coast going at 11 a.m., and the Owls taking on Valparaiso at 1:30. The Crusaders fell 1-0 to FGCU in the first match of the Classic Friday.
