BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team kicked off the 2016-17 athletic season with a 2-1 win over Southern Utah on Friday night. It was the first ever FAU women's soccer match held at FAU Football Stadium.
After SUU scored in the second half to cut FAU's lead to 2-1, the Thunderbirds had a chance to tie the score, but Shelby Green's shot hit off the crossbar to preserve the Owls' advantage.
- Elisha Holmes scored the first goal of the season when she beat the Thunderbird keeper low to the left corner in the sixth minute.
- Sammy Rowland had a great individual effort to put FAU up 2-0 in the 25th minute on a goal to the low right corner.
- Friday's attendance was 668. It's the second year in a row that the Owls have drawn over 600 fans. They drew 672 fans to last year's match vs. Miami.
FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker
"I'd like to thank the administration for allowing us to play this match in the football stadium. It was a great atmosphere, it was a great start to the season and if we keep progressing this way, we'll be in a good place."
The Owls will travel to Gainesville to face Florida on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.com.
