Experience the Name of the Game for Women's Golf

Sept. 20, 2012

The Florida Atlantic women’s golf team begins their 2012-13 season this weekend, and head coach Joan Joyce welcomes back a bulk of experience atop the squad.

The low scorer from a year ago, Sweden native Anna Wiklund, is back for her fourth season with the team. Wiklund finished 17th or higher in seven of the nine tournaments she played in last season, including back-to-back third-place finishes in two February matches. Her scoring average was 76.8, and she was even better as the weather got warmer, shooting an average of 75.6 during spring matches.

Two more seniors and a returning junior return with a great deal of collegiate tournament familiarity under their belt: Marilyne Cadieux and Madden Leen, alongside junior Kayla DeSuza. DeSuza has the team’s second lowest returning average, at 84.6.

Sophomore Nicole Marino is the fifth returnee. Her first tournament with the squad as a freshman came last November, and she finished tied for 11th at the Gary Freeman BCU Spring Invitational in late February.

Three newcomers round out the roster. Junior Rene Kelly, a transfer from Pfeiffer College, joins freshmen Christina Langer and Emily Peters as the newest Owls. See what Coach Joyce had to say about each of these three here, at the official blog of FAU Athletics, the Daily Hoot.

Joyce, in addition to longtime assistant Tom Vuicich, has also added former Owls’ golfer Jennifer Norton to her staff. Norton played for Joyce from 2006-11.

This weekend’s Lady Falcon Invitational, hosted by Daytona State, will be played Saturday and Sunday at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach. It is the first of four fall tournaments, and 10 tournaments overall, that the Owls will compete in, culminating in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament in mid-April.
