WILLIAMSBURG, VA - It was an impressive start to the 2007-08 season for the Florida Atlantic University women's golf team in the first round of the Colonial Women's Intercollegiate at Williamsburg, VA as the Owls placed two players atop the field after 18 holes on Monday.
Praewnapa Phol-Uayporn shot an opening round 69 (-3), placing her atop the leader board heading into Day 2 action. A Sun Belt All-Conference selection a year ago, Phol-Uayporn followed up a par performance through the course's first nine holes with a 33 on the back nine. The junior led the field with 15 par holes on the day, firing three birdies with no bogies en route to a one-stroke lead.
June Bolme followed closely behind with a two-under 70, tying her for second place with Morgan Stepanek of host school William & Mary. The senior tied for the lead in Par 3 and Par 4 scoring (2.75, 3.90), sinking three birdies along with 14 pars on the day.
Jennifer Norton (+5, 77), Karine Bolme (+7, 79) and Kimberly D'Andrea (+8, 80) rounded out the scoring for Florida Atlantic, contributing to a sparkling team total 295 - good for a nine-stroke lead over second-place University of Richmond (304).
FAU paced the field by four strokes in Par 3 scoring with an even par average, and dominated Par 4s by a six-stroke margin over their closest competitors. Play concludes today at Williamsburg Colonial Golf Club.
