Bonita Springs Fla. – Florida Atlantic University's women’s golf team opened up their season on Sunday at the 2013 Eagle Invitational hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. The tournament is being played at the par-72 Worthington Country Club course in Bonita Springs. The Owls finished the 18-hole first round in sixth place with a team total of 32-over 320.
The Worthington course features four par three, 10 par four and four par five holes and a total yardage of 6,045. The 2013 Eagle Invitational features eight Florida-based teams including FGCU, Bethune-Cookman University, The University of Tampa, Johnson and Wales, Northwood University, Barry University and The University of West Florida.
Jacqueline Shelly was FAU’s top finisher for round one shooting six-over 78 to tie for 16th-place. Shelly shot even par on 11 holes. Returning golfer Christina Langer finished with seven-over 79 carding one birdie and even par on 12 holes, a team high for the round. The sophomore tied for 21st with teammate Amanda Ploener who had three birdies.
Kayla DeSuza finished fourth for FAU carding 12-over 84 to tie for 38th. Nicole Marino rounded out the team’s players shooting 17-over 89 for 43rd-place. Barry University leads the tournament after the first round with a team total of 296.
The second round scheduled for today was suspended due to rain. The tournament will now be 36 holes with the second round of 18 to be played tomorrow with tee times set for 8:15 a.m.
