Buies Creek, NC - Paced by three golfers finishing in the top-10, Florida Atlantic University's women's golf team opened the first round of the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Championship in fourth place. Jessica Carafiello, Amanda Pettit and Natalia Navarro all finished in the top-10; marking the second time this season the trio has finished in the top-10 after the first day of play.
Carafiello, tied for seventh, shot a front nine 37 and back nine 40 to finish five-over par, trailing the leader by only three-strokes. Pettit shot identical scores on the front and back nines, finishing tied for tenth with a first round 78. Navarro, March's A-Sun Golfer-of-the-Month, is also tied for seventh with a first round 78. She has opened up a tournament in the top-10 in five of her last six tournaments. Sandi MacDougall and Maria Gutierrez shot rounds of 90 and 91, respectively.
The Lady Owls opened the tournament with a team round of 323, trailing host Campbell University by 22-strokes for the lead. Georgia State (316), Jacksonville (322) and Troy State (324) round out the top-five.
Florida Atlantic continues play in the A-Sun tournament on Tuesday, April 20.
