Miami, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's golf team opened the Ryder Florida Collegiate Women's Championship hosted by the University of Miami in fifth place after shooting a team round of 321 at Don Shula's Golf Resort. Natalia Navarro and Amanda Pettit both finished tied for 14th on the 6,317-yard, par 72 course.
Navarro, the Atlantic Sun Women's Golfer-of-the-Month for March, opened the day with a front nine 38 before shooting a back nine 41 to finish five strokes off the lead. Navarro saw her consecutive opening round top-10 finishes end at five. Pettit fired a front nine score of 40 before improving one-stroke on the back nine. This marks the third time this season that she has opened a tournament in the top-15. Jessica Carafiello shot an opening round 81 while Kendall Kirby is not far off after shooting an 82. Sandi MacDougall opened with a 90, respectively.
The Lady Owls, fresh off their first win this season, are 16-strokes behind the leader, South Florida. Rollins College (309), Florida State University (318) and host Miami (320) round out the top five. UCF (329) Jacksonville (335) and Stetson (335) are the only other A-Sun schools participating in the 14-team field
