DeLand, FL - Paced by Jessica Carafiello's tournament low round of 74, Florida Atlantic University's women's golf team finished six-strokes ahead of Jacksonville University to claim its first victory of the year at the Hatter Spring Fling hosted by Stetson University. Carafiello finished third individually while Natalia Navarro stretched her consecutive top-four finishes streak to seven after placing fourth. The Lady Owls have won this event two years in a row.
Carafiello recorded her highest finish of the year after jumping four places from the previous day on the 6,031-yard, par 72 Victoria Hills Golf Course. This is her third top-10 and first top-three finish this year. Navarro held onto fourth despite shooting a final round 80. This marks the third time this year that both Carafiello and Navarro have finished in the top-10 together. Kendall Kirby improved seven strokes to fire a season low 81, tying her career high with a 21st place finish. Amanda Pettit recorded the biggest turnaround for the tournament, improving 16-strokes from the previous day to shoot a final round 80. Freshman Sandi MacDougall finished with a two-day score of 181.
Florida Atlantic headed into the final day of competition trailing JU by eight-strokes, but a tournament low second-round 315 erased the deficit and put the Lady Owls on top. JU (653), host Stetson (654), Daytona Beach Community College (659) and Southwest Missouri State (665) round out the top-five in the nine-team event.
FAU returns to action Friday, April 2 at the Ryder Florida Collegiate Championship in Miami, FL.
