Lakeland, FL. - Natalia Navarro shot an opening round 72 to lead Florida Atlantic University to first place in the first round of the Lady Moc Classic hosted by Florida Southern College at Cleveland Heights golf course. The Lady Owls shot a team round of 301, its lowest total this year, on the 5997-yard par 72 course.
Navarro, who finished eighth in last weeks tournament, started the afternoon shooting a front nine total 38, two behind the leader. But an exceptional back nine score of 34 catapulted her to the top of the leader board as she heads into the second round with a two-stroke lead in the 107 player tournament. Anne Fraser, Atlantic-Sun Women's Golfer-of-the-Week, and Jessica Carafiello shot opposite scores on the front and back nine to both finish with rounds of 76 to put them in a tie for eighth place. Heidi von Korff, who struggled to find her shot last week, ended the day five-over par to finish in a tie for 12th place while Amanda Petit finished with a score of 80 but is only four strokes back from the top ten.
FAU leads by a commanding eight strokes over Washington State University (309) and is 15 stokes ahead of the nearest A-Sun competitor. Daytona Beach Community College (312), Middle Tennessee State (316) and Stetson (316) round out the top five in the 21-school competition.
FAU continues play in the Lady Moc Classic, Saturday, March 1, with tee times scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
