Orlando, FL. - Anne Fraser and Natalia Navarro shot opening rounds of 78 as the Florida Atlantic University women's golf team finished fourth on the first day of competition of the University of Central Florida Invitational at Stoneybrooke Country Club.
Fraser led all Owls with an opening front nine score of 39 to set the pace for a consistent afternoon on the 5919-yard par 72 course. The senior from Deerfield Beach, FL., fired a repeat score of 39 on the back nine to finish in a tie for ninth place at five over par. Navarro was right on her heals as she rebounded from her opening nine of 40 to shoot 38 on the back to move into a tie for ninth as well. Kendall Kirby, playing in her first collegiate tournament, fought off freshman jitters to shoot a seven over par 79 and finish in a tie for 13th place. Jessica Carafiello improved five strokes from the front nine to finish nine over par while Heidi von Korff picked up her play on the back nine to finish 12-over par.
The Lady Owls concluded the first day of play with a team score of 316 and are only 12 strokes back from leader Florida Southern College. The University of Miami (310) and Rollins College (313) finished two and three and fellow Atlantic Sun rival and tournament host UCF (318) finished fifth.
The Lady Owls will wrap up play at the UCF Invitational Tuesday, February 25, 2003.
