Orlando, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's golf team opened the spring season tied for fifth at the UCF Invitational at Stoneybrook Country Club. The Lady Owls, which last played November 2, fired an opening round of 320 in the 12-team field. Natalia Navarro, November's Atlantic Sun Women's Golfer-of-the-Month, finished tied for tenth place, marking the third time this year she has opened a tournament in the top-10.
Navarro rebounded from a front nine score of 40 to shoot 37 on the final nine holes. Heidi von Korff shot a season low 79 to finish in a tie for 22nd place. Jessica Carafiello and Maria Gutierrez both fired rounds of 82, while Amanda Pettit shot a first-round 83.
FAU finished 21-strokes behind leader Georgia State University on the 5,891-yard, par 72 course. Jacksonville University (303), Augusta State University (307) and Florida Southern (307) round out the top five. The Lady Owls finished third among the six participating A-Sun schools, ahead of Troy State University (329), Stetson University (332) and host UCF (334).
Florida Atlantic will conclude play in the UCF Invitational on Tuesday, February 10.
