Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team returns to Sun Belt Conference (SBC) action in hopes of recapturing its winning ways at Troy University on Friday, December 21, at 1 p.m. in Troy, Alabama.
The Owls, 5-5 on the season, are looking for a 3-0 start to SBC play for the second straight season. They started league play with a pair of home wins over the University of South Alabama and Arkansas State University before suffering three straight losses, including the first home game of the season 78-66 to Stetson University on Saturday, December 15.
Friday’s game features the SBC’s two highest scoring teams: Troy is averaging 79.9 points a game, while FAU is scoring 72.1 points per outing.
For Florida Atlantic, junior forward Chenise Miller, a preseason all-SBC selection, is coming off her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Stetson. She leads the team by averaging 13.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a game, and has recorded 17 blocked shots.
Senior guard Breana Turner has returned to the form that made her a preseason All-SBC selection in 2011, before missing the season with an injury. She is averaging 12.3 points and has scored in double figures in the last two games, including a season-high 25 points at the University of Wisconsin.
Junior guard Takia Brooks rounds out the team’s double-digit scorers by averaging 12.1 points a game.
Troy stands 3-7 on the season and is 0-2 in league play, falling to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock 75-52 and Western Kentucky University 84-81. The Trojans have scored 80 or more points in seven of their 10 games, highlighted by a 118-point performance against Furman University. The team is coming off an 88-83 overtime win at Jacksonville University on Tuesday, December 18.
Britney McCloud is Troy’s leading scorer at 14.6 points a game and is making 50 percent of her 3-point field goal attempts. Kourtney Coleman is averaging a team-high 6.9 rebounds a game, while scoring 10.9 points an outing. Joannna Harden and Ashley Beverly-Kelley are also double-figure scorers for the Trojans.
FAU swept Troy in two meetings last season, including a 66-46 triumph at Troy.
