Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team plays its final non-conference game of the season by hosting in-state opponent Stetson University on Saturday, December 15 at 2 p.m. from the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
FAU is coming off two hard-fought losses to teams from major Division I conferences. The team most recently dropped an 82-73 overtime game at the University of Wisconsin on Monday, December 10. The road trip started with a 59-58 loss at Mississippi State University on Friday, December 7.
The Owls stand 5-4 on the season and are a perfect 3-0 in the FAU Arena this season. Those victories have come against Jacksonville University, 96-79 on Sunday, November 18; University of South Alabama, 67-56 on Wednesday, November 28; and Arkansas State University, 79-71 on Saturday, December 1.
Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay’s team is ranked fifth nationally in turnover margin (+9.9 per game) and leads the Sun Belt Conference in committing the fewest number of turnovers, averaging 15.1 turnovers per game. The team ranks second in the conference in scoring at 72.8 points per outing.
Individually, junior forward Chenise Miller leads Florida Atlantic in scoring (13.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg), while also recording 14 blocks on the season.
Junior guard Takia Brooks is averaging 13.1 points per game and had a career-high 27 points at Mississippi State. Senior guard Breana Turner rounds out the team’s double-figure scorers at 12 points a game. Turner scored a season-high 25 points at Wisconsin.
Stetson stands 4-4 on the season and is coming off an 81-73 loss at Charlotte on Saturday, December 8. That loss snapped the team’s three-game winning streak. The Hatters are led by senior guard Victoria McGowan, who is averaging 16.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Other double-figure scorers include senior guard Shanasa Sanders (13 ppg) and sophomore guard Jama Sharp (10.6 ppg). Stetson and FAU were once rivals in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
