Boca Raton, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University basketball players Greg Gantt and Lyrell Barfield proved you can go home again after shining in homecoming performances for their teams last week. Both have been recognized as the Athletic Department’s Student-Athlete of the Week for the first time this season.
Gantt averaged 16 points, made 48 percent of his field goals and played 69 of a possible 80 minutes in two games last week. The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard returned to his hometown of Gainesville to score a team-high 17 points last Tuesday against nationally ranked Florida. He wrapped up the week by scoring 15 points and collecting five rebounds at George Mason last Saturday.
For the season, Gantt is averaging a team-high 16 points a game and is on pace to break Ernest Crumbley’s school record of 62 three-point field goals made by a sophomore. Gantt has made 18 shots from behind the circle so far this season and has been successful on 50.6 percent of his field goals (39 of 77).
Meanwhile, Barfield made a significant impact in her season debut for the women’s basketball team. The Miami native was named to the all-tournament team of last weekend’s University of Miami’s Thanksgiving Tournament after scoring 21 points and having seven steals in two games. She started the week by tying for team-high honors with 11 points and four steals in the Owls’ home victory over Eastern Kentucky.
This is an important week for FAU athletics as the football team gets national television exposure in the Senior Day game against Sun Belt Conference rival Troy on Saturday, December 4, starting at 2 p.m., in front of ESPNU’s cameras. This will be the second nationally televised game for the Owls this season.
Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team has two non-conference battles against teams from major conferences. On Tuesday, November 30, the team faces Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference, starting at 8 p.m. Then, FAU will host in-state rival South Florida of the Big East Conference on Saturday at 7 p.m. from the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
The women’s basketball team travels to Tampa for a match up against USF on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
