It will be a tournament atmosphere for the Florida Atlantic Women's basketball team this weekend. The Owls host the FAU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday and Sunday at FAU Arena.
"We've got three great teams coming in this weekend," said FAU Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "The fans that come out this weekend are going to see some great women's basketball."
The Owls are coming off a 1-1 week. They defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 80-46 on Thursday, and lost to Kentucky 61-53 Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jaimie Givens led the way, getting a double-double in both games.
FAU plays Robert Morris on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Colonials are 1-1 on the season, losing only by four to Florida, 67-63. They are led by senior forward Chinata Nesbit, who was named Northeast Conference player of the week after scoring 21 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists in the Colonials 90-65 win over Kent State.
Samford will face FAU on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season, having already knocked off SEC foe Alabama earlier in the year, 48-46. They boast a balanced attack, led by guard Monica Mitchell's 11.5 points per game.
Coach Dugan knows that playing tough opponents back to back will prepare her team for the road ahead.
"Not only does (this weekend) prepare us for the conference season, it prepares us for the conference tournament," said Dugan. "It's a tight turnaround, we've got to be preparing for it all this week."
