The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team had its share of opportunities in the second half against Kentucky, cutting the deficit to five on a couple of occasions. However, they were unable to overcome committing 26 turnovers and missed shots in a 61-53 loss to the Wildcats.

The Owls got off to a fast start, outscoring Kentucky 11-4 after a Breana Cox putback four minutes in. The Wildcats rebounded after that, going on a 16-2 run to go up for good at 20-13. Kentucky was led by Samantha Mahoney, who led all scorers with 19 points on six of 13 shooting. UK led 35-23 at the half.

FAU was not done, and faught back to within 45-40 with eight minutes to go on a Carla Stubbs layup, she tied for the team lead in scoring with 13. The Owls had a very sound defensive first half, as the Wildcats only shot 12 percent (3-25) from the floor in the second half. However, the Owls got into foul trouble late, as three players fouled out and Kentucky had 33 free-throw attempts and made 20 of them to slowly pull away with the win.

"I thought that we really should have won the game," said head coach Chancellor Dugan. "I thought we shot ourselves in the foot committing 26 turnovers and we can't send a home team to the free-throw line as much as we did."

Jaimie Givens had a very good game for the Owls. With her dad, former Kentucky great Jack Givens and a number of family members in attendance, Jaimie scored 13 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds to keep the Owls in the game.

Brittney Bowe was the only other Owl in double figures, scoring 12 points, most of which came late in the game.

The Owls fall to 1-2 on the season and get will return to action on Saturday when they face Robert Morris as part of the FAU Thanksgiving Classic. Game time on Saturday is at 3 p.m. and can be heard on fausports.com.
