Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team opens its home schedule on Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m. against Jacksonville University at the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. Staff and volunteers of the Broward Meals On Wheels (BMOW) program will be honored at the game.
The Owls stand 1-1 on the season after suffering a 71-61 loss at Bethune-Cookman University on Friday, November 16. The team opened the season with a 20-point victory at Georgia Southern University on Friday, November 9.
“We need to bring intensity every time our players get on the court – in practice or games,” stated Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay in post-game comments at Bethune-Cookman. “Our players are learning that little things like rebounding and free throws can play a significant role in the outcome of the game.”
Junior guard Latavia Dempsey and junior forward Chenise Miller lead FAU’s offensive attack, both averaging 14.5 points per game. Dempsey had connected on four 3-point field goals. Junior guard Takia Brooks rounds out the double-figure scorers at 10 points per outing. The Miami native scored 13 points at Bethune-Cookman.
Jacksonville is also 1-1 on the season after picking up a 68-54 home win over Bethune-Cookman on Monday, November 12. The Dolphins are led by Jade Cargill’s 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Stephanie Edwards is scoring at a 10.5 point clip.
Florida Atlantic’s team has teamed with BMOW program in its fight against hunger among senior citizens living throughout Broward County. The non-profit organization relies on 600 dedicated community volunteers to provide over 1.2 million meals annually. One in 11 senior citizens are considered “food insecure,” with the age group at highest risk being those 60 to 64 years of age.
