 - After months of preparation and training, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will take to the court for its first official game of the 2017-18 season when the Owls host Mercer on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the FAU Arena.

Sunday will be the first installment of the Jim Jabir era of Owls' women's basketball.

The old Atlantic Sun foes will meet for the 36th time in the two program's history. The two teams faced off last season in Macon, Ga. with the Bears taking a 74-57 win. Raven Doyle led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds during the game. Mercer leads the series, 21-14, but FAU claims an 8-6 edge in contests played on their home court.

FAU is 14-19 all-time in season openers and 23-10 in home openers in program history. The Owls have won two straight season openers and eight consecutive home openers.

The Owls traveled to crosstown foe Lynn University on Nov. 4 for their lone exhibition game. FAU earned a 79-67 victory against the Fighting Knights. Senior Sasha Cedeno led all scorers with 21 points in the contest. She also had four rebounds, two assists and a block in the game.

In her first game back, redshirt junior Danneal Ford burst on the scene with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Redshirt-senior Raven Doyle was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Bears opened their season on Friday night with a 73-64 win at UCF. Point guard Sydni Means had a double-double with 15 points and 12 assists. Kahlia Lawrence had a game-high 26 points in the contest.

Mercer returns its top nine scorers from last season's 25-7 squad. Lawrence was tabbed 2018 preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year after claiming the 2017 title.

The Bears were picked to finish first in the conference after claiming back-to-back regular season titles in 2015 and 2016.
