Boca Raton, FL -Six quality players will be battling for playing time at the two frontcourt positions for the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team this season. With the start of the season this week, www.fausports.com takes an inside look at the 2011-12 Owls. Today, we examine the frontcourt positions.

The frontcourt is led by senior Vontrice Dennis, the team’s leading returning rebounder after posting four double-double games in her first year as an Owl. She improved throughout last season to rank among the team’s top scoring threats, accounting for 8.3 points per game.

Senior April Goins improved throughout the spring and off-season conditioning program, and the Detroit, Mich. native is being looked up to become more consistent throughout the season.

“This is a strong returning group, and the addition of redshirt Chenise Miller should really improve our play in the front court,” said Chancellor Dugan, FAU’s head women’s basketball coach. “Our frontcourt will give us a lot of flexibility – offensively and defensively, depending on an opponent’s strengths and the game situation.”

Miller looks to make an immediate impact to the frontcourt unit after transferring from Eastern Michigan University. Senior DaLita Scott is an athletic guard/forward who has the ability to create mismatches on the floor. Senior Mariana Byczkowski adds height and a rebounding presence to the position.

Meanwhile, newcomer Kelsey Proctor, a transfer from John Wood Community College, adds a strong defensive and rebounding mindset, and is the team’s tallest player at 6-foot-3. She has the ability to be an inside offense presence with her skills to score by using both hands around the basket.

“Kelsey brings us a defensive and rebounding presence that we lacked last season,” said Duggan. “Adding those newcomers with the ever-improving Vontrice Dennis, this is a unit that can compete with any opponent on the schedule. April (Goins) has had a strong offseason, improving her strength and conditioning. I believe she is poised to have a breakout senior year.”

The Owls open the season on Friday, November 11, against Warner Southern University at 7 p.m. from the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Live statistics and audio of the game can be found at www.fausports.com.
