BOCA RATON, Fla. Florida Atlantic University women's basketball coach Kellie Lewis-Jay announced Thursday that Sophia Witherspoon has been hired as director of operations. Witherspoon is a former University of Florida and WNBA standout.
"We are extremely excited to have Sophia Witherspoon join our women's basketball program," said Lewis-Jay. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience which will be very beneficial to our student athletes. I couldn't ask for a better fit for our family."
Witherspoon played basketball for UF from 1988-91. She finished her Gator career as the sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,381 points. A first team All-SEC selection as a senior, Witherspoon also excelled in the classroom. The Office of Student Life at UF created an academic award in her honor following her graduation. The Sophia Witherspoon Award for Overall Excellence is presented each semester to two individuals who exemplify the positive attitude and strong work ethic in the classroom that they display on the playing field. She was inducted into the UF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
Witherspoon was drafted by the New York Liberty in the 1997 WNBA Draft and played in the league for seven seasons. Witherspoon scored 2,219 points and racked up 449 rebounds in her career.
The Owls went 12-17 last season, but will return four starters and eight players for their first season in Conference USA.
