BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team will host Southern Miss on Friday at 7 p.m.
The game will be streamed live on CUSA.tv (subscription required) called by Max Ziffer and live stats will be provided during the game. Fans can also keep with the action by following @FAU_WBB on Twitter for live updates of the game.
Friday will be the fifth meeting between FAU and Southern Miss. Overall, the Golden Eagles have 4-0 record against the Owls. Both teams will look to bounce back from losing streaks.
This weekend’s games will be the last home games of the season for the Owls and the final games in the Burrow for six FAU players; Raven Doyle, DaChé Williams, Sasha Cedeño, Malia Kency, Nika Zyryanova and Melinda Myers. The group will be honored during a ceremony on Sunday before the Owls take on FIU.
FAU has led Conference USA in rebounds per game almost the entire season. The Owls are currently averaging 43.0 per game, which is the 16th highest mark in the nation. The Owls also are first in the league in defensive boards, averaging 29 per game, which is 13th highest in the country. FAU is one of two teams in Conference USA with three players in the top 20 in the league in rebounds per game with Sasha Cedeño (8.0 rpg), Ra’Kyra Gabriel (6.8 rpg) and Raven Doyle (6.1 rpg).
The Owls are averaging 69.6 points per game this season, which is third in the league and the highest for an FAU team since the 2013-14 season. Cedeño leads the team in scoring and is the fifth leading scorer in the conference, averaging 17.2 points per game. The Owls have two others averaging double figures in Danneal Ford (13.1 ppg) and Tyana Robinson (11.5 ppg).
FAU features two players who have been dishing out dimes this season. Danneal Ford has maintained an average of 4.5 assists per game, fifth highest in Conference USA and Malia Kency has an average of 3.3 per game and an assist/turnover ratio of 1.73, which is fifth highest in the league.
LAST TIME OUT
Last week, the Owls traveled to Old Dominion for a Valentine’s Day date with the Monarchs. FAU held a one-point lead going into the final quarter, but ODU made the comeback and squeaked out a 59-54 win. Raven Doyle led the Owls with a season-high 18 points.
On Saturday, FAU traveled to take on rival FIU in Miami. The Panthers claimed the win against the Owls. Sasha Cedeño scored her 1,000th career point during the game, becoming the eighth member of the FAU 1,000 Point Club.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISS
The Golden Eagles have lost three-straight games and have struggled on the road this season with a 3-9 record in away games. Southern Miss is led in scoring by Jayla King who is averaging 15.5 points per game this season. Shonte Hailes and Megan Brown are also averaging in double digits with Hailes scoring 12.6 ppg and Brown with 12.3 ppg.
FAU will stay home on Sunday to host rival FIU on Senior Day. The Owls will be honoring six players in a ceremony before the game. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and fans are encouraged to arrive early for the ceremony.
