BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will play its final game of a three-game road swing at WKU on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. (CST).
Saturday's game will be the 19th meeting between FAU (10-8, 4-3 C-USA) and WKU (16-5, 7-1 C-USA). Overall, the Owls are 2-16 in the series with the Lady Toppers. WKU won the lone matchup between the two teams last season, 76-55, on December 30, 2016.
The Owls have won eight of their last 12 games and have started conference play, 4-3, for their best start through seven games since the 2014-15 season. FAU has played three straight road games and four of the last five away from Boca Raton.
FAU comes into the game as the conference leader in rebounds per game with an average of 44.6, which is the seventh highest mark in the nation. The Owls also are second in the league in defensive boards, averaging 30 per game, 10th highest in the country. FAU is the only team in Conference USA with three players in the top 15 in the league in rebounds per game with Sasha Cedeño (8.1 rpg), Ra'Kyra Gabriel (7.7 rpg) and Raven Doyle (6.4 rpg).
The Owls are averaging 72.4 points per game, which is third in C-USA and the highest for an FAU team since the 2013-14 season. Cedeño leads the team in scoring and is the fourth leading scorer in the league, averaging 17.9 points per game.
FAU features two players who have been dishing out dimes this season. Danneal Ford has maintained an average of 4.8 assists per game, fourth highest in Conference USA and Malia Kency has an average of 3.4 per game, eighth highest in the league. FAU is one of only two teams in the league with two players in the top eight in that category.
LAST TIME OUT
FAU split last week's road contests. At UTSA, the Owls put up 99 points in their largest conference victory this season. FAU's 99 points were the most scored in a conference game by an Owls team since 1999 and was the second most points scored in a Conference USA game this season. The Owls fell at UAB two days later.
Ra'Kyra Gabriel led FAU in both contests, scoring 27 at UTSA and 24 at UAB. It was the first time in her career she has scored 20-plus points in back-to-back games. She also shot 6-of-8 from beyond the arc last week, including 4-of-5 at UAB.
The Lady Toppers have won four straight games and sit atop the Conference USA standings. WKU is led in scoring by Tashia Brown, who leads the league in points per game and is sixth nationally, averaging 23.1 ppg. Ivy Brown leads on the rebounding front, averaging 9.7 boards per game, second most in C-USA.
