BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will play its second road game in three days on Saturday afternoon at UAB. Tip off is set for 5 p.m. (EST) and will be broadcast on ESPN3.


Saturday's game will be the ninth meeting between FAU (10-7, 4-2 C-USA) and UAB (16-3, 5-1 C-USA). The Blazers hold a 6-2 record in the series and have won three straight. UAB won both matchups last season. In Birmingham, the Owls fell, 66-55. Later in the season in Boca Raton, FAU kept it much closer but UAB still escaped with a 78-75 win.

Women’s Basketball Nipped by UAB 78-75
Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball (4-24, 0-17 C-USA) was nipped by UAB, 78-75, (14-14, 7-10 C-USA) at The Burrow on Thursday night. Four Owls hit double figures led by freshman Katelyn O’Reilly who broke her career-high in points with 23 in her first double-double of the season.

The Owls have won eight of their last 11 games and have started conference play, 4-2, for their best start since the 2012-13 season. Both teams will come into the game on two-game winning streaks. The Owls previously defeated Louisiana Tech and won at UTSA while UAB topped North Texas and FIU.

FAU comes into the game as the conference leader in rebounds per game with an average of 44.8, which is the eighth highest mark in the nation. They also lead the league in defensive boards, averaging 30 per game, ninth highest in the country. FAU is the only team in Conference USA with three players in the top 15 in the league in rebounds per game with Sasha Cedeño (8.5 rpg), Ra'Kyra Gabriel (7.8 rpg) and Raven Doyle (6.7 rpg).

The Owls are averaging 73.3 points per game, which is third in C-USA and the highest for an FAU team since the 2013-14 season. Cedeño leads the team in scoring and is the second leading scorer in the league, averaging 18.9 points per game.

FAU features two players who have been dishing out dimes this season. Danneal Ford has maintained an average of 4.6 assists per game, fourth highest in Conference USA and Malia Kency has an average of 3.8 per game, sixth highest in the league. FAU is one of only two teams in the league with two players in the top nine in that category (Ford-fourth, Kency-seventh).


FAU stayed in the winning column at UTSA on Thursday night with big performances from several Owls. The Owls scored 99 points in a conference game since 1999 and it was the second most points scored in a Conference USA game this season.

FAU had three players with 20-or-more points in the game. Ra'Kyra Gabriel registered a career-high 27 points, Danneal Ford tied her career high with 25 and Sasha Cedeño had her eighth 20-point game with 22.


The Blazers are currently first in the Conference USA standings with a 5-1 record and a head-to-head win over WKU, who is also 5-1.

UAB has three players averaging double digits this season. Rachael Childress leads the way with a 14.5 points per game average. Deanna Kuzmanic follows, averaging 12.4 and Miyah Barnes averages 11.4.
