BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will begin a three-game road trip on Thursday at UTSA.
Thursday's game will be the sixth meeting between FAU (9-7, 3-2 C-USA) and UTSA (3-15, 1-5 C-USA). The Roadrunners own a 3-2 record all-time versus the Owls and have won two straight games in the series. UTSA won both matchups between the two teams last season. On January 12, the Owls suffered a 72-62 loss at home. Then on February 25, UTSA defeated FAU, 97-66, in San Antonio. The Owls have won seven of their last 10 games and have started conference play, 3-2, for their best start since the 2012-13 season.
FAU comes into the game as the conference leader in rebounds per game with an average of 44.9, which is the ninth highest mark in the nation. They also lead the league in defensive boards, averaging 30 per game, 10th highest in the country. FAU is the only team in Conference USA with three players in the top 15 in the league in rebounds per game with Sasha Cedeño (8.6 rpg), Ra'Kyra Gabriel (7.7 rpg) and Raven Doyle (6.7 rpg).
The Owls are averaging 71.7 points per game, which is third in C-USA and the highest for an FAU team since the 2013-14 season. Cedeño leads the team in scoring and is the second leading scorer in the league, averaging 18.7 points per game.
FAU features two players who have been dishing out dimes this season. Danneal Ford has maintained an average of 4.6 assists per game, fourth highest in Conference USA and Malia Kency has an average of 3.6 per game, sixth highest in the league. FAU is one of only two teams in the league with two players in the top nine in that category.
LAST TIME OUT
FAU bounced back with an 86-72 win against Louisiana Tech at home on Saturday after falling at UTEP the previous Thursday. The Owls scored a season-high 50 points in the first half against the Lady Techsters. FAU's 86 points were the most points scored in a conference game by the Owls in two seasons.
The Roadrunners have lost two straight, suffering losses at WKU and Old Dominion most recently. UTSA is led by Crystal Chidomere who is averaging 13.6 points per game this season. Marie Benson leads the Roadrunners on the rebounding front, averaging 9.8 boards per game.
