Boca Raton, FL - Two of the Sun Belt Conference’s top women’s basketball teams will square off on Saturday, January 19 when Florida Atlantic University hosts the University of North Texas, starting at 3 p.m., in the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
Both teams bring in 6-2 league records into the game. That mark is good enough for FAU to be third in the SBC’s East Division, while North Texas leads the West Division.
The Owls stand 9-7 overall after a 74-63 home-court victory over Troy University on Wednesday, January 16. That victory extended the team’s home winning streak to 10 games. Junior guard Latavia Dempsey scored a career-high 24 points against Troy. She ranks third in the SBC with 43 three-point field percentage, and her 28 three pointers rank fifth in the league.
FAU is sixth nationally among NCAA Division I teams in turnover margin (+7.4) and leads the league with 12.8 steals per game. The team is second in the conference by averaging 72.8 points per game.
Leading that scoring attack is junior forward Chenise Miller at 14.4 points per game. She ranks eighth in the conference with 7.4 rebounds. Junior guard Takia Brooks (11.4 ppg) and senior guard Breana Turner (11.3 ppg) round out the team’s double-figure scorers.
North Texas, 7-10 on the season, started its Florida road trip with a thrilling 70-68 victory at FIU on Thursday, January 17 in Miami. Alexis Hyder leads four Mean Green players scoring in double digits, averaging 13.4 points per outing. She scored a game-high 20 points at FIU. Other scoring threats are Loryn Goodwin (11.3 ppg), who had 19 points on Thursday night, BreAnna Dawkins (10.6 ppg), and Laura McCoy (10.2 ppg).
The Owls swept the two meetings between both teams last season, picking up a 56-55 victory in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
