Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team returns home in hopes of snapping a two-game losing streak with a Sun Belt Conference (SBC) game against Troy University on Wednesday, January 16 at 7 p.m. in the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
The first 300 students attending the game will receive a free T-shirt.
The Owls are 5-2 in SBC games after suffering road losses last week to East Division leaders Middle Tennessee State University and Western Kentucky University. The most recent loss was an 86-68 setback at WKU on Saturday, January 12.
Overall, FAU stands 8-7 on the season. The team is 4-1 in the FAU Arena this season and has won its last nine home conference games.
Another home victory would give Florida Atlantic a season sweep of the Trojans after picking up an 81-80 win on Friday, December 21. The winning margin came on a free throw by junior guard Latavia Dempsey with 1.2 seconds left in the game. Senior guard Breana Turner scored a game-high 25 points, and junior forward Chenise Miller added 16 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting.
On the season, Miller ranks seventh in the SBC in scoring (14.2 ppg) and eighth in the league (7.3 rpg). She leads the conference with 34 blocks and ranks 26th nationally among Division I players in that statistic.
Junior guard Takia Brooks is scoring 11.9 points per contest and Turner (11.3 ppg) rounds out the team's double-figure scorers. Junior guard Kimberly Smith had 18 points at Western Kentucky and ranks second on the team with 22 three-point field goals.
Wednesday's game features a matchup of the SBC's two top offensive teams. Troy is scoring a league-high 75.3 points a game after a 75-69 home loss to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Thursday, January 10. FAU's offense is averaging 72.7 points per contest.
Defensively, the Owls rank sixth nationally in turnover margin (+7.3) over their opposition.
Troy stands 3-12 on the season and is still looking for its first SBC victory. The one-point setback to FAU started a five-game losing streak for the Trojans. Freshman guard Ashley Beverly-Kelley leads the team with 12.7 points per game, while being followed closely by junior guard Britney McCloud at 12.1 points a game.
FAU will end the week with a home game against the University of North Texas on Saturday, January 19, starting at 3 p.m.
