BOCA RATON, Fla. –Florida Atlantic University’s men’s basketball player Justin Raffington and women’s basketball player Latavia Dempsey led both teams to victories in conference play over the weekend, earning the pair FAU’s honor of student-athlete of the week.
Raffington began conference play with a splash, registering back-to-back double-doubles in the Owls’ first-ever Conference USA game. On Jan. 9, Raffington had 12 points and 12 rebounds at Louisiana Tech. Against Rice on Jan. 11, he had his fourth consecutive double-double and fifth of the season while helping FAU to the first C-USA win in program history and a win in its first game away from Boca Raton in nearly a year. The Owls topped Rice 73-68.
Dempsey recorded a new career-high with 28 points against Rice on Jan. 11 in her 100th career game. The senior had 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting in the first-half alone. She set an FAU Arena record with seven three-pointers and led FAU to tying the school record with 14 treys in the game against the best three-point defense team in the conference. Behind her efforts, FAU scored an astounding 41 points in the first 10:03 of the game and finished with a 97-69 victory.
Both teams return to FAU this week as women’s basketball hosts FIU on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and men’s basketball hosts East Carolina on Thursday, Jan. 16. Both games tipoff at 7 p.m. Live stats are available at fausports.com.
