BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University’s Justin Raffington of men’s basketball and Kimberly Smith of women’s basketball were instrumental in victories last week earning the pair student-athlete of the week honors.
Raffington continued his solid junior season, opening 2014 with his third double-double of the season in an 81-47 win over Warner on New Year’s Day. He scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, helping the team set a school record with 61 rebounds in the game. For the season, the San Francisco transfer is 8.7 points and a team best 8.2 rebounds per game.
Men’s basketball faces Louisiana Tech tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Ruston, LA before traveling to Houston, Texas to play Rice on Jan. 11 at 8 p.m.
Smith flirted with a double-double in FAU’s 81-65 win over Bethune-Cookman. The senior guard set a new career high with eight assists. Six of those assists, as well as eight of her 11 points, came in the second half as the Owls pulled away from the Wildcats. Smith posted her seventh double-digit scoring performance of the season. She continued her streak from beyond the arc, making a three-pointer in 17 consecutive games and has made at least one three-pointer in 38 of her last 42 games.
The women’s basketball team hosts Rice on Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. followed by FIU on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
