Boca Raton, FL - The first-place Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team begins an important road trip on Wednesday, January 9, with a game at perennial Sun Belt Conference (SBC) championship contender Middle Tennessee State University, starting at 8 p.m., in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Owls lead the SBC’s East Division with a 5-0 record, matching the best conference start in program history. The team stands 8-5 overall after posting three straight victories – tying for the longest winning streak of the season.

FAU ranks second in the conference in scoring, averaging 74.1 points per game, and has a defense that’s fifth nationally in turnover margin (+8.5 per game).

Junior guard Latavia Dempsey has paced the offensive attack in recent games, scoring a career-high 19 points in the team’s last game, a 79-44 home win over the University of Louisiana on Wednesday, January 2. She made all five 3-point field goal attempts in the game. Dempsey scored 18 points in a win over the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Saturday, December 29. Overall, she is scoring 9.8 points per game and making 47 percent of her 3-pointers.

Junior forward Chenise Miller, a preseason all-SBC selection, leads the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounds (7.2 rpg). She has had 28 blocked shots.

Senior guard Breana Turner is averaging 12.2 points a game and is making 81 percent of her free throw attempts, while junior guard Takia Brooks rounds out FAU’s double-figure scorers at 11.1 points per outing.


 

 

The Owls set a school record with 13 blocks against Louisiana, and collected season highs for points allowed (44), rebounds (57) and 3-point field goals (11). The team has made at least one 3-pointer in 87 straight games, dating back to the 2009-10 season.

Middle Tennessee, the defending conference champions, is 9-5 on the season and is coming off a 60-39 road win at the University of South Alabama on Saturday, January 5. The Blue Raiders have a 4-1 mark in league play. Junior forward Ebony Rowe leads the team by scoring 20.8 points and grabbing 10.6 rebounds per game. Senior guard Kortni Jones is averaging 13.7 points a contest, while senior forward Icelyn Elie is scoring 13.5 points per contest.

FAU’s road trip continues on Saturday, January 12 at Western Kentucky University (12-3 overall, 5-1 in SBC) in Bowling Green, Kentucky at 5 p.m.
