Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team will ring in the new year with a home Sun Belt Conference (SBC) game against the University of Louisiana on Wednesday, January 2 at 7 p.m. in the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
The Owls are tied for first place in the SBC’s East Division with a perfect 4-0 mark after the first two weeks of the conference season. That 4-0 league record is the team’s best start in SBC history and first since being a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference in the 2002-03 season.
The latest triumph was an 82-72 victory at the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Saturday, December 29. Junior forward Chenise Miller had a game-high 22 points, while junior guard Latavia Dempsey scored a career-high 18 points. Other FAU double-figure scorers were junior guards Kimberly Smith and Briah Blakely, with 12 and 11 points respectively.
That balanced scoring has helped the Owls have the second best offenses in the SBC, averaging 73.7 points a game. That offensive average ranks 31st nationally among NCAA Division I teams.
Meanwhile, the defense has helped Florida Atlantic rank fifth among nationally with a plus-nine turnover margin.
Individually, Miller leads the team by averaging 14.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Senior guard Breana Turner is scoring 12.8 points per contest, while junior guard Takia Brooks is scoring at an 11.1-point clip.
Dempsey is making 41 percent of her 3-point field goal shots and is scoring nine points a game. Smith has recorded 17 steals and ranks third on the team with 4.6 rebounds per contest.
Louisiana stands 7-6 on the season and picked up its first conference win with a 56-54 double-overtime victory against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday. The team is led by freshman guard Sylvana Okde (12 ppg), freshman guard Keke Veal (10.5 ppg) and sophomore forward Byronesha Santiago (8.3 rpg).
FAU played its last SBC home game on December 1 against Arkansas State University, a 79-71 victory. The team also defeated the University of South Alabama 67-56 on November 28 in the FAU Arena.
