BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team topped Delaware State on Friday afternoon, 90-67, to advance to the championship game of the FAU Holiday Classic. The Owls will face the winner of Stetson vs. UMKC Saturday at 2:30 p.m.


FAU (5-5) took an early lead against Delaware State (1-11) and led for 38:32 of the game.

Delaware State scored the first points of game on a three in the opening minute, but FAU responded quickly with an 11-0 run to permanently take the lead.

FAU's largest lead came at the 5:10 mark of the fourth quarter when the Owls took a 27-point lead on a pair of free throws from Danneal Ford.


The Owls offense generated 90 points on 42.6 percent shooting from the field. That point total was a new season high for FAU and the first time crossing the 90-point mark since November 13, 2015 against Akron.

Sasha Cedeno had her fourth double-double this season with 25 points and 11 rebounds. She added three steals into the mix. Cedeno was also 6-of-6 from the free throw line and she has now made 12-straight free throws extending two games.

Tyana Robinson and Malia Kency each had 13 points in the game. Kency was a scorching 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Ra'Kyra Gabriel added 12 points and was one rebound short from a double-double.

Danneal Ford continued to fill out the statistics sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. DaChe Williams tied her season high in rebounds with five and had seven points in the contest. Melinda Myers provided a spark off the bench with six points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

FAU was aggressive on defense, registering a season-high 12 steals in the game. The Owls also had a season-low eight turnovers in the game while forcing Delaware State into 25 miscues. FAU capitalized with 28 points on turnovers.
