BIRMINGHAM, AL -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated by UAB, 95-73, Friday night in the first round of the UAB Lady Blazer Classic in Birmingham, AL. Jackie Brown and Cristal Randolph each had a season-high 13 points. UAB's Gennifer Bridges led all scorers with 22 points. Natasha Thomas had 20 points to go along with 16 rebounds.
FAU (1-4) fell behind 8-3 to start the game before going on a 12-4 run to lead 15-12 at the 12:47 mark. UAB's Vanessa White hit back-to-back threes to initiate a 14-2 run that gave UAB the lead for good and a 26-17 cushion with 10:53 left in the half. The Lady Blazers would go on to lead 53-35 at the half.
UAB (3-6) put the game out of reach with a 10-0 run to start the second half. A three-point play by Shontavia Williams with 11:43 left capped off a 15-5 run for the Lady Owls, who then trailed 68-50. That was as close as FAU would get as UAB built its lead to as much as 25 points down the stretch.
"We didn't play well at all tonight," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "It's disappointing because this was a team I felt we could defeat. We never could sustain a run."
FAU shot 43 percent from the field on 26-for-61 shooting. UAB was 51 percent, going 37-for-72. The Lady Blazers held a 43-39 rebounding advantage and forced 19 FAU turnovers.
Florida Atlantic next takes on Birmingham-Southern Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm EST in the final round of the tournament.
