Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team ended the non-conference portion of its 2012-13 schedule with a 78-66 loss to Stetson University on Saturday at the FAU Arena. The loss evens the Owls’ record at 5-5 on the season.
Junior forward Chenise Miller led three double-figure scorers for FAU with her second double-double of the season -- 15 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Breana Turner added 15 points off the bench and junior guard Kimberly Smith chipped in 13 points.
Florida Atlantic led throughout most of the first half, building a six point lead, 13-7, at the 13:19 mark following a 3-point field goal by junior guard Briah Blakely. However, Stetson closed the half with an 8-0 run over the final 3:47 to take a 34-27 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Owls closed to within four points, 36-32, after a layup by Turner with 16:48 remaining. Later, a 5-0 FAU run brought the deficit down to five points, 53-48, with nine minutes remaining. Those five straight points came by Smith, who connected on one of her four 3-pointers, before a layup by junior forward Shanequa Schrouder.
The Owls could not get within five points the rest of the way in falling for the first time at the FAU Arena this season.
Stetson (5-4) was led by Shanasa Sanders’ 18 points and nine rebounds. Victoria McGowan scored 17 points while Jama Sharp added 16 points.
