BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team crafted a 21-2 run over the final seven minutes of overtime to down UCF 82-69 in double overtime on Friday night to extend its winning streak to six games.
The Owls (6-2) have not lost at home this season (4-0) and have won six in a row dating back to their record-setting win over Florida Memorial on Nov. 16. The Knights (7-2) dropped just their second game of the season in the first overtime meeting of the series.
FAU's Takia Brooks scored a game-high 18 points, including a layup with four seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 61.
In the first overtime, UCF jumped ahead to a six-point lead before Kimberly Smith drained four-straight free throws to pull the Owls within two with less than a minute to play. Brooks then hit a jumper with 0:34 to tie the game at 67 apiece.
The second overtime was dominated by FAU as the Owls scored 15 points before allowing UCF a single point. FAU forced five turnovers and capitalized with points on each one.
Smith scored eight of her 13 points in the overtime periods while Brooks scored five points in the extra minutes. Senior Chenise Miller played a career-high 41 minutes and posted 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Shaneese Bailey grabbed a career-high nine rebounds while scoring nine points and swiping four steals.
The Knights out-rebounded the Owls with the help of Brittni Montgomery's record 24 boards. FAU, however, owed the rebounding edge 38-26 after the first half.
The Owls will travel to Lubbock, Texas next week for the 2013 Travelers Invitational to face Abeline Christian, Jacksonville and host Texas Tech.
