BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the second game in three days, the Florida Atlantic women’s basketball team gutted out another double overtime performance. This time the Owls (3-4) came out on top with an 83-75 win against North Florida (4-4) on Sunday afternoon in FAU Arena.
Sunday’s game came down to the wire after having 15 ties and 11 lead changes. The contest was tied for 14:09 and each team led for around 18 minutes each. At halftime, the game was deadlocked. The score was tied and most statistics were even.
The third and fourth quarters were much of the same and neither team was able to pull away from the other. Late in the fourth, Danneal Ford hit a jumper to put the Owls ahead by two. North Florida responded with a layup and tied the game once again. With 23 seconds left, Melinda Myers laid it in and once again gave the Owls a two-point lead, but the Ospreys hit a pair of free throws to knot the game up and send it to overtime.
The first overtime was deadlocked and both teams traded basket for basket to send it to a second extra period. Fatigue from two double overtime games in three days did not show for the Owls and they took over in the second overtime. FAU outscored North Florida, 15-7, in the frame to earn the win.
Danneal Ford led the Owls in scoring with a career-high 25 points. She also had six assists, three rebounds and a steal. Ford was clutch for the Owls, scoring seven points in the two overtime periods, including a jumper that tied up the game at the end of the first overtime to send it to a second.
Ra’Kyra Gabriel had a second straight double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds in the game. In the past two games, Gabriel has combined to grab 30 rebounds which is seven more than her season total previous to the Grand Canyon game.
Tyana Robinson connected on five three-pointers in the game, tying a season-high for the Owls this season. Robinson finished with 21 points and shot 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She also had four assists in the game, a new career-high.
Melinda Myers came off the bench and had her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Owls crashed the boards once again and outrebounded the Ospreys, 57-45, in the game.
The Owls will take a week off before hitting the road for the next two games. FAU will travel to Georgia State on Dec. 15 and Nebraska on Dec. 19.
