The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team was tied at 60 with under three minutes to go against St. Bonaventure. However, the Bonnies went on a 7-0 run late in the game to hand FAU a 78-72 loss at FAU Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Down by six in the first half, FAU went on a 9-0 run to take a 13-10 lead on buckets by Brittany Bowe, who tied a career-high with 18 points. The lead would change hands multiple times before halftime and St. Bonaventure would lead 30-28 at the break thanks to Dana Mitchell, who led the Bonnies and all scorers with 21.
St. Bonaventure went on a 14-6 run to start the second half with a 44-34 point lead after a three by Andrea Doneth. FAU responded and slowly cut into the lead, finally taking the lead 54-53 on a jumper by Bowe with eight minutes left. The game stayed close through most of the second half. However, with the game tied at 60, Doneth hit an open three in the corner with three minutes to go to give the Bonnies the lead for good.
Rebounding was also a big story in the ballgame. St. Bonaventure outrebounded FAU 47-29, picking up 16 offensive boards.
"I thought we came out in the second half and we just looked flat," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "To be outrebounded like we were was just inexcusable."
Four players scored double digits for the Owls, led by Bowe's 18, which earned her a spot on the FAU Holiday Classic. Breana Cox was named tournament MVP after her second straight 16 point effort for the Owls. Carla Stubbs and Jaimie Givens each scored 11 and 10 points respectively. The Owls shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, and only committed 11 turnovers.
St. Bonaventure also had four players in double digits, led by Mitchell's 21. Mitchell was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Bonnies. Andrea Doneth added 19 points on nine of ten shooting from the free-throw line. Erica Schiefen and Cara Gustafson each added 10 points apiece.
