BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women’s basketball team battled with Grand Canyon in double overtime in a game that featured seven ties and five lead changes, but come up short, 77-73, on Friday night at FAU Arena.
FAU led all of the first half and took a 31-23 lead into halftime. Grand Canyon stormed back in the fourth quarter behind hot shooting from the Lopes guards. In a three-minute span, Grand Canyon connected on four three pointers and took a two-point lead. After traded baskets, the Lopes had a three-point lead when Tyana Robinson was fouled on a made layup. Robinson hit the free throw and tied the game.
In overtime, Grand Canyon scored first but Jamaria Williams banked in a three to give the Owls a one-point lead. Again, the two teams exchanged baskets and the game was tied at the end of the extra period.
FAU took a lead three times early in the second overtime period, but Grand Canyon scored the last four points of the game to escape with the win.
The Owls used their size in the paint for much of the game. Ra’Kyra Gabriel and Raven Doyle were the primary contributor in the post. Gabriel had her second career double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Doyle added 10 points and eight rebounds. FAU outrebounded Grand Canyon, 52-43, and outscored the Lopes, 38-22, in the paint.
Tyana Robinson led the Owls in scoring with 18 points on the night. The redshirt freshman was 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Danneal Ford had an impressive night with 10 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and one steal in the game.
Jamaria Williams had her first double-digit scoring game of her FAU career with 11 points. She also had three rebounds in the game.
The Owls will be back in action on Sunday when they host North Florida at 2 p.m.
