BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team won its fifth-consecutive game with its 78-62 to win over Rhode Island en route to winning the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday.
Seniors Chenise Miller and Kimberly Smith were named to the All-Tournament team as the Owls won their first tournament since the 2006-07 season. FAU (5-2) is on its longest winning streak since the 2005-06 season and has won five in a row by an average of 25 points per game.
After trailing by three at halftime, the Owls 12-0 early in the second half with eight of those points coming from senior Takia Brooks.
The FAU defense held Rhode Island (1-6) to just one field goal and four points over the final 6:46, ending the game on a 17-6 run to seal the victory.
The Rams finished as the runners-up in the tournament followed by Detroit and Georgia Southern.
Miller led the Owls with 16 points, her fourth-straight game reaching double-digit scoring. Brooks and Latavia Dempsey scored 15 and 11 points, respectively. Smith's statistics were well-rounded as she posted ten points, five rebounds, five steals, three assists and a block.
With only eight turnovers in the game, FAU has played six games in a row with a non-negative assist/turnover ratio. The Owls shot 19-24 from the free throw line, their second-best performance of the season.
The Owls remain at home for their next contest when they host UCF at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13.
