Defense Leads Women's Basketball Over Georgia Southern

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team opened the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament with an 82-58 win over Georgia Southern on Friday. The Owls (4-2) are on their first four-game winning streak since the 2008-09 season and will face Rhode Island (1-5) on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m.

FAU committed just one turnover through the first 26 minutes of Friday's game and jumped out to a 48-19 lead at halftime. The Owls scored 34 points off of GSU's 27 turnovers in the contest and utilized their depth to lead the Eagles in bench points 48-10.

Seniors Chenise Miller and Kimberly Smith led FAU with 11 points each while fellow senior Shanequa Schrouder tacked on ten points. Miller broke her streak of back-to-back double-doubles, but grabbed five rebounds in the first half. Senior Ashley Stevenson tied her career high with nine points on 3-of-5 from the field.

The Owls held the Eagles to just 39% shooting from the field and 8.3% from three-point range. FAU led by 35 early in the second half after going on a 20-4 run.

The Owls will face Rhode Island for the first time in school history before taking off time for finals. FAU will remain at home for a Dec. 13 contest against UCF before taking part in the Travelers Invitational at Texas Tech Dec. 20-22.
