BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University nearly overcame a 20-point second half deficit, only to fall 75-70 to Manhattan College in the championship game of the FAU/Embassy Suites Classic Saturday in Boca Raton. Shontavia Williams, who was named to the all-tournament team, once again led FAU (1-2) with 16 points while Trineca McCleod tossed in 14.
Manhattan (3-0) built its largest lead at 63-43 with 12:59 left in the game before the Lady Owls became to chip away. Trailing 70-53 at the 8:26 mark, FAU scored 15 straight points, capped off by a three-pointer by Janka Deckerova, to trail just 70-68 with 2:19 remaining. Manhattan would then score the game's next five points to take a 75-68 lead with 44 second remaining as the Lady Owls would manage just one more bucket.
The Jaspers opened the game with seven straight points and built a quick 14-4 lead with 15:39 left in the first half. Manhattan led by as many as 15 in the first half before settling for a 46-35 advantage at the intermission.
FAU's hopes of a strong start to the second half were dashed when Manhattan opened on a 15-8 run to lead by 20 at the 12:59 mark.
The Jaspers shot 55-percent from the field, including 67-percent in the first half. FAU was held to 37-percent for the game and 29-percent in the first half. The Lady Owls held a 40-38 rebounding edge and forced 27 turnovers. Manhattan was an efficient 5-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Danielle Cooper and Nikoletta Deutsch led Manhattan with 16 points each. Rosalee Mason scored 15 to go along with 12 rebounds on her way to MVP honors.. Serra Sangar added 14 points and eight rebounds.
Williams and Sally N'Diaye each led FAU with six rebounds. Deckerova finished with eight points, including two treys.
Florida Atlantic next faces Central Florida on December 4 at FAU Gymnasium in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener.
