TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Monday night at Indiana State by a score of 66-58. The victory was the first of the Jim Jabir era at FAU and it snapped a 21-game losing streak beginning last season on December 16.
Indiana State went up 3-0 in the first 30 seconds of the game, but the Owls quickly came back to take the lead and kept it for the remainder of the game. Sasha Cedeño went on a 5-0 personal run with a layup and a three to put the Owls ahead 5-3 at the 8:15 mark of the first quarter. The Sycamores tied it up a minute later, but Cedeño hit two free throws to put FAU ahead for good. The Owls scored 26 points in the first quarter, resulting in a 26-13 score at the end of the period. The 26 points were the most in a quarter this season.
FAU kept a comfortable distance between themselves and Indiana State in the second quarter going up by 11 by halftime.
The Sycamores were able to cut the lead to single digits multiple times in the second half, even getting it two in the fourth quarter. The Owls used a 8-0 run late in the fourth to give themselves a cushion as the final buzzer sounded.
For the second consecutive game, senior Sasha Cedeño was the leading scorer for the owls, but this time she was able to outdo her previous career high in points and secure her first career double-double. Cedeño ended the game with 26 points, 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal. She had 14 points in the first quarter alone.
Danneal Ford continues to be the box score filler for the Owls. The redshirt-junior had nine points, seven rebounds and eight assists in the game.
Senior point guard Malia Kency had 12 points and three assists in the contest. Her 12 points were a season high and the second most on the team in the game.
FAU now leads, 2-1, in the series against Indiana State and have two straight against the Sycamores.
The Owls will play two more games this week, hosting the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday and Saturday. FAU will play St. Frances-Brooklyn first on Friday at noon, while Norfolk State and Bowling Green will play at 2:30. On Saturday, the Owls will play either Norfolk State or Bowling Green at noon or 2:30 depending on Friday's results.
