MACOMB, Ill. - A whopping 48 bench points helped the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team fend off Western Illinois on Wednesday, as the Owls beat the Leathernecks 81-77 on the road. Seniors Latavia Dempsey and Chenise Miller led the FAU (2-2) with 19 points each.
FAU rallied from being down three at the half to go on a 12-0 run to take the lead midway through the second half. The Owls would extended that run to 21-3 to stretch their lead to 12 points with 4:32 to play. Dempsey scored six points on the run while Shanequa Schrouder tacked on five points in a span of just 45 seconds.
The Leathernecks (3-2) cut the lead back down to three with five seconds remaining on a layup by Michelle Maher, but Dempsey hit a free throw to seal the deal for FAU.
The Owls scored 12 of their 14 second-chance points in the second half alone including ten in the final nine minutes of the game.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak in non-conference road games for the Owls in their first game in the state of Illinois since 2008.
Miller recorded 19 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and four assists in her 35 minutes of action. Dempsey scored 19 points off the bench while dealing out four assists and two blocks. Schrouder tacked on nine points and six boards while Ashley Stevenson scored nine points and swiped three steals in her home state.
FAU remains on the road to face Cleveland State on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Cleveland. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
