BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a game that featured four lead changes and two ties, the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team fell, 66-55, to Mercer on Sunday afternoon at FAU Arena.
After falling behind in the first quarter, the Owls stormed back to take a 19-14 lead behind a 10-0 run fueled by back-to-back three pointers from senior Malia Kency. The Owls led for the rest of the half.
Mercer came out of halftime and scored four straight points to tie the game. The two teams traded baskets for most of the third quarter, but the Bears took the lead late in the period and held it for the remainder of the game.
Junior Ra’Kyra Gabriel made her presence known in the paint, recording her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Redshirt-junior Danneal Ford led all scorers with 20 points in the contest in her first official game since redshirting last season. Her 20 points were a new career high. Ford also added five rebounds and four assists.
The Owls won the battle on the boards, coming up with 42 rebounds. FAU had four players with five or more boards; Raven Doyle (seven), Sasha Cedeño (five), Ford (five) and Gabriel (10).
The Owls will take on Colorado on Wednesday for the first road game of the year. Game time is set for 9 p.m. (EST).
