BOCA RATON, FL -
Tamica Pierce scored 31 points as Florida Atlantic University defeated Nova Southeastern University, 69-61, in a Saturday afternoon exhibition in Boca Raton, FL. Chantale Jones also finished in double figures with 12 for the Lady Owls.
Pierce, a junior college transfer from Northeast Mississippi College, paced FAU with 9-of- 18 shooting from the field while making 12 of her 13 free throws. She also contributed two blocks and four steals. LaKeita Lee and Crystal Boyland, two other newcomers for the Lady Owls, finished with 10 rebounds and 12 rebounds, respectively.
"You play exhibitions for a reason," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "That's to find out what you need to work on. Having said that, I was very pleased with our effort. I thought we played hard and with intensity the whole time."
FAU led 32-29 at the half before slowly adding to that advantage in the second half. Their largest lead was 12 points late in the game before NSU cut it down to eight at the final buzzer.
"There are a lot of things we need to improve upon," added Dugan. "But, if we get the effort we gave today for the rest of the season, we're going to be a much-improved team."
For the game, FAU shot 34 percent compared to NSU's 40 percent. The Lady Owls forced the Knights into 32 turnovers. Freshman Angie Rodgers scored nine points while Lee had seven.
FAU next hosts the NWBL team November 17 at 7:00pm in the team's final exhibition.
